[Main Story] Chapter 6: Breeze of Youth, Page 13

Packed Lunches・School Canteen・Likes and Dislikes

Ding dong ding dong—

(The wind boys of Class 1-F come out into the corridor.)

Minato      It’s lunch time!

Osei          Off, to lunch!

Soshu            Are you two kids…let’s be off right away. Seems like Izumitani’s already on the roof, he’s spamming us on NYAIN.

Takara            Ahaha, it always feels like a long time till lunch whenever we’ve got morning practice, doesn’t it. I’m already starving…

Minato           Ah, Izuru! Aoto!

Aoto              Minato…

Minato           Join us for lunch too!

Aoto              Ahh, my bad. I didn’t pack a lunch today, ‘m eating in the school canteen with Izuru.

Minato           I see…school canteen…I wanna go to the school canteen too!

Izuru              Y-Yup…u-um, I also, want to have…lunch, with you and the others…

Soshu            Now that you mention it, Maruyama-senpai and Ijeong-senpai also mentioned that they meet to have lunch at the school canteen every now and then.

Takara            That’s nice. Shall we plan to have lunch at the canteen together as well? …How about tomorrow?

Osei               Sounds great! I usually pack my lunches, so I’ve never eaten at the school canteen yet. How exciting!

Growl…

Minato                I want to eat quickly…

(Minato is playing his trumpet on the roof.)

♪~~~♪~~~

Soshu            Minato suddenly started playing the trumpet like that, but…I suppose that’s allowed because we’re on the roof.

Takara            Ahaha, indeed. He’ll probably get scolded, if he were to play it in the canteen.

Mashu           Eh!? Mina-kun can play the new piece already? Eh? Why why!?

Soshu            Apparently, Tobaya played it for him, after they distributed the new scores during morning practice. …Minato can more or less play things once he’s heard them once, after all.

Minato           What, that makes him a genius!

Hibiku            Ah, right…you didn’t know about that.

Mashu           I didn’t hear about it! Seriously, that’s a real cheat skill~! Sounds like he can get popular from it!

♪~~♪~~

Minato           (This is fun! The new piece…I want to play it with everyone soon. I want to have combined practice soon!)

(Meanwhile, Toki, Sogaku, Ijeong, and Daisuke are in the school canteen.)

Toki                          Mm! Yummy.

Toki                          The yummiest food in the canteen’s tonkotsu ramen with extra wood fungus, hands down.

Daisuke                    —Indeed, the tonkotsu ramen that you recommend is truly delicious. Furthermore, when it comes to this dish known as the tonkotsu ramen…

Daisuke                    From red ginger to ground sesame…it’s a ramen that allows you to savour a variety of flavours depending on the toppings you add, isn’t it. Mmm, delicious!

Ijeong                       Packed lunches are also nice, but school food is fun every now and then too, right. I went with the Set B. The meat and potato stew is crazy yummy you know!

Sogaku                     Eating at the school canteen is fun, isn’t it~.

Ijeong                       It’s also funs to select from the menu spread, right! What did you get, Sogaku?

Sogaku                     I always go for the canteen’s daily special~.

Ijeong                       Daily special? The daily special changes every day, right? Why do you always go for the daily special?

Sogaku                     I order it without looking at what the menu says it is~. That’ll get you all excited about what they’ll give you, right?

Toki・Ijeong            Huh~!/I sees!1

Daisuke                    Still, Sogaku-kun. …Today’s daily special has got carrots in it, you know.

Sogaku                     ……Ahaha.

Ijeong                       Wow! Are you okay even if you do not like carrots, Sogaku?

Toki                          Hey Sogaku, carrots are crazy nutritious, you know! They’ve got that, you know that thing, uhh…anyway they’re good for your body so eat them!

Sogaku                     Fufufu…they’re good for both your eyes and ears, aren’t they.

Toki                          That’s right! They’re good for you so you should eat them!

Sogaku                     Yup. All right…!

Sogaku                     Chomp! Nom nom nom…nom…guh…gulp.

DaisukeIjeong・Toki     Ohh…!

Daisuke                    S-Sogaku-kun…are you alright? Here, have some water.

Sogaku                     …Gulp gulp. Gahh…!

Sogaku                     …I-I managed to eat it…

Toki                          Yeah yeah! Eat up! Apparently you’ll get a real tough strong body if you do, you know.

Ijeong                       Oh~! Toki, why have you left only the green peas in your fried rice behind?

Toki                    …Ah.

Toki・Sogaku          That was a great meal!/That was a nice meal~.

Ijeong                       Hey, Daisuke. About band practice.

Ijeong                       The same goes for ‘Wonder World’ but we also must practice lots more for ‘Breeze of Youth’ right?

Daisuke                    That’s right. We must be chosen as one of the six representative schools, in order to pull through the prefectural preliminaries and get into the Hokuriku preliminaries, after all.

Toki                          Six schools huh…around how many schools participate in the prefectural preliminaries every year?

Sogaku                     If I recall, there were 12 last year? I do think that there’ll be around the same number this year you know~.

Toki                          So that means! Half will get to move on right? Then that’s a cinch!

Daisuke                    I don’t know about that. We’ve listened to the other schools perform for the Chunichi contest, but all of them had delivered wonderful performances.

Daisuke                    I’m certain that the other schools that didn’t manage to get a gold award must also be doubling down on their practices after reflecting on their performance for the Chunichi Contest, the way we are as well.

Toki                          Ahh…well, they would I suppose. It’s like, um~ who’s that again?

Toki                          The one that clinched a gold at the Chunichi Contest, that performed second to last~ uhh…

Sogaku                     Takinan Private High?

Toki                          That’s the one! That school was crazy good, huh.

Toki                          Their set piece was also ‘New Voyage’, but…they sounded totally different although it was the same piece.

Sogaku                     Takinan’s always been a strong school~. Their advisor’s also really passionate, and it seems like they’ve got external instructors too.

Toki                          External instructors…what’re those?

Daisuke                    Concert bands are composed of many different instruments after all. It’s difficult for the conductor to provide guidance for all the instruments on their own.

Daisuke                    So they invite external instructors of different specialties, to provide guidance to the students.

Ijeong                       I see, Sensei did say that they were unable to provide guidance for the horns after all.

Ijeong                       You are real good, Daisuke, so you are a lifesaver, but there are also things that Sensei cannot teach when they are on their own, right.

Toki                          Hmm…that’s kinda different from light music, huh. For light music, we learn from our graduated alumni or people we know…

Toki                          But how can we ever compete with schools that hire external instructors and stuff…mumble mumble.

Ding dong ding dong

Toki                Ah, oh no. It’s the first bell. Sogaku, we’ve got PE next so let’s hurry.

Sogaku           Yup. See you then, Daisuke-kun, Ijeong-kun.

Ijeong            See you after class~!

(Ijeong and Daisuke walk down the corridor.)

Ijeong            By the way Daisuke, any idea what we will be doing for the ‘Career Information Session’ during the third period on the day after tomorrow?

Daisuke         Yeah, we’ll be listening to talks from Ibuki alumni. About how we ought to spend our time in high school, and how to consider our future courses and careers.

Daisuke         Our senior’s talks will help us in making decision on our own courses and careers.

Daisuke         We’ll just so happen to have a parent-teacher conference right before the summer holidays, right? I do believe that we’ll be talking about our course selections then as well.

Ijeong            I see, we have to make a lot of decisions when we are in our second year, right. Courses huh~. …I will be looking forward to hearing what all the different people have to say.

To be continued…

Translator’s Notes

1 Ijeong’s Japanese: Ijeong’s picked up many odd words and phrases from his aunt’s friend. Most of them are obsolete and no longer used today. My choice of translations are an attempt to make him sound as eccentrically enthusiastic as possible. Below is all the slang that he’s used in this page, in order of appearance:

「ナルナル」(narunaru) – I sees

I won’t go into detail as to their original meanings here, but if you’re interested, I explain them here, in a dictionary of Ijeong-speak. I also link this within the translation every time he uses a new slang that hasn’t appeared before in the story.
